CONDITIONS

The La Herradura Local Authority of the Almuñécar Town Council, in collaboration with the Spanish Ministry of Culture, the Cultural Departments of the Andalusian Regional Government and the Provincial Government in Granada, invite entries to the XXIX “Andrés Segovia” International Classical Guitar Competition, to be held in La Herradura from Tuesday 19th to Saturday 23rd November, 2013.

The object of this competition, open to all concert performers, is to promote the appreciation and study of the guitar, and also to honour the memory of Don Andrés Segovia y Torres, adoptive son of Almuñécar and La Herradura.

This year's event pays tribute to Maurice Ohana (1913-1992), on the centenary of his birth, and to Salvador Bacarisse (1898-1963) on the fiftieth anniversary of his death, and commemorates the 25th “Andrés Segovia” Composition Competition.

Enrolment

AAny guitarist irrespective of nationality, who is under the age of 35 on the date of the competition, may apply to compete in the XXIX "Andrés Segovia" International Classical Guitar Competition.

No application will be accepted from a candidate who has previously won First Prize in this competition.

Applicants should submit directly, or through the academic or governmental authorities of the country, the duly completed registration form before November 4th, 2013 to:

The application form should be accompanied by the following documents:

  • Photocopy or PDF of his DNI, passport, or if the applicant is stateless, proof of identity and place of residence.
  • Photocopy or PDF of academic diplomas obtained.
  • "Curriculum Vitae."
  • Two recent photographs, passport style in PDF or JPG, one measuring 9 x 12 cm.
  • Details of the individually – chosen “free choice compositions” in addition to the set piece, that the competitor intends to play in the First and Second Qualifying Rounds.

1.3A registration fee of 50 euros (exclusive of transfer charges) is payable by all competitors before November 4th, 2013, in order to confirm their application.. This fee should be made by bank transfer, made payable to the Ayuntamiento de Almuñécar and specifying the competitor´s name with the reference XXIX Certamen Internacional de Guitarra Clásica “Andrés Segovia”.

The La Herradura Local Authority of the Almuñécar Town Council will provide free accommodation from Thursday Novenber 21nd until the end of the Competition to those competitors who pass through to the Second Qualifying Round.

Qualifying Rounds

The XXIX "Andrés Segovia" International Classical Guitar Competition will consist of three Qualifying Rounds open to the public. On November 19th a public draw will be held at 1 pm in the Civic Center of La Herradura, to determine the order of performance of candidates admitted to the competition. The Qualifying Rounds will be as follows:

FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND:

In the order decided by the draw, the registered competitors will interpret the following works, in the Auditorium of the Civic Center:

Two or more of their own choice, of no more than 15 minutes’ duration in total.

And the following set pieces:

Mauricio Ohana (1913-1992): Tiento (5'31") (Published by M.R. Braun). and another work of their own from among the compositions which have been awarded a prize over the XXV years of the “Andrés Segovia” Composition Competition:

The Competitors will give the Technical Secretary the score of the individually-chosen works for the Second Qualifying Round.

SECOND QUALIFYING ROUND:

Competitors who have passed the First Round successfully will interpret the following, in the order previously established, or by a new draw:

Two or more individually-chosen works, different from the previous choice and of contrasting styles, and not exceeding 20 minutes in total, and the set piece

At the end of the Second Round, the Jury will decide on and announce the names of the competitors who will pass through to the Third and Final Round.

THIRD ROUND. GUITAR AND ORCHESTRA

The competitors who have passed the Second Qualifying Round will interpret, in the order already established, or in a new order decided by draw:

Salvador Bacarisse, Concertino para guitarra y orquesta en la menor, op. 72 (1957) (Editorial Ópera 3).

The prize-winners must collect their prizes personally and participate in the Closing Ceremony of the Competition.

PRIZES

The Prizes are as follows:

  • The "Andrés Segovia" FIRST PRIZE of 9.000 (nine thousand) euros, and a Superior Quality Guitar from the guitar-maker LUÍS SANTIAGO HERNÁNDEZ, son, disciple and co-worker of Paco Santiago Marín and a recital in the Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada in its programme for 2014.
  • The "Andrés Segovia" SECOND PRIZE of 4.000 (four thousand) euros, and a “Romantic” Guitar, being a copy of that of José Pernas (Granada, 1938), built by the musicologist and guitar-maker AARÓN GARCÍA RUIZ, and a recital for guitar in the Festival Internacional de Música y Danza “Ciudad de Úbeda” in its programme for 2014.
  • The "Andrés Segovia" THIRD PRIZE of 2.000 (two thousand) euros.
  • The “Leo Brouwer” SPECIAL PRIZE of 700 (seven hundred) euros for the best interpretation of the work "El Yelmo de Mambrino" by Fernando Fiszbein (Buenos Aires – Argentina, 1977), , winner of the XXIV “Andrés Segovia” Composition Competition - 2012.
  • A PRIZE by JUVENTUDES MUSICALES ALMUÑÉCAR, (Musical Youth organisation of Almuñecar), to encourage the youngest guitar player who has passed the first Round.

The other competitors who reach the Third Round will receive a "Diploma de Finalista" and the La Herradura Local Authority of the Almuñécar Town Council will provide them with free accommodation until the end of the competition.

THE JURY

The Jury will be chosen by mutual consent of the Organising Institutions, and will consist of a President, a Secretary and a minimum of three Members (maximum of six) of recognised eminence in the world of music and the guitar.

The Jury will judge not only each Competitor's performance but will also give equal consideration to the interest, the difficulty and the diversity of style of the individually-chosen works., as well as to whether all the pieces are played from memory.

The Jury reserves the right not to award any of the prizes. The Jury's decision is final.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

The Organisers will extend invitations to attend the Second and Third Rounds to music professionals (impresarios, recording company representatives, music critics, etc.) together with the media, who will be allowed to broadcast the performances upon request.

The "Andrés Segovia" International Classical Guitar Competition reserves for itself the copyright title of all the Competition performances and of any possible recording, or public broadcast thereof, for a period of two years.

The Organising Committee accepts no responsibility for indemnification for any possible damage loss or harm caused or suffered by the Competitors as a result of the Competition being held.

Any competitor who is discovered to have given false information in the documentation which he has presented will be automatically and immediately disqualified.

The Competition rules are binding on all applicants.
