On the occasion of his residence in this privileged settlement on Granada coast, on June 6th 1983, Andrés Segovia was named “Adopted Son of the town of La Herradura and Almuñécar”. In his honor, the old “Paseo de La Herradura” was renamed “Paseo Andrés Segovia” and the “Andrés Segovia” International Classical Guitar Contest was created. In January 1985, the first edition was held in the Church of San José, with musicologist Antonio Martín Moreno as President of the Jury. Since 2006 the contest has been held in the Auditorium of the Civic Center of La Herradura — now Auditorio «Diego Martínez»— around November 22th, Saint Cecilia day, patron saint of music. Along with the Contest, between 1987 and 2015 a guitar works competition was held. Coinciding with Andrés Segovia’s centenary, since 1993 Her Majesty Queen Sofía has held the Contest Honorary Presidency. From the XXXI edition (2015) the President of the Jury was the musician and cultural manager Diego Martínez. Since 2021 the musicologist Francisco J. Giménez is the President of the Jury.
Internationally renowned professionals have taken part in the “Andrés Segovia” International Classical Guitar Contest Jury, such as Leo Brouwer, Antón García Abril, Jesús Villa Rojo, Claudio Prieto, Joaquín Clerch, Franz Halász and David Martínez —the last three, International guitarists awarded in the Contest first editions.
